Welcome to Amsterdam!
Our organization THDV was founded in 1855 by pastor Jan de Liefde (his last name means Love in Dutch so he was the right man for the job!). He saw the poverty in Amsterdam and decided to leave his rich Canal house and reach out to those in need. He walked through the slums of Amsterdam with bread and Bible. Giving help to those in need to provide them with food and with the word of God. Today, this is still the way THDV works. Our organization reaches out to those in need; the homeless, prostitutes, addicts, refugees and children growing up in poverty. Over more than 160 years our story has not changed; we offer practical help and we offer Jesus. We long for people to be free of addictions, slavery en poverty and we want them to meet Jesus; the only person who can set them free.
The red light district in Amsterdam is famous in the whole world. In this area prostitution takes place as a legal business under Dutch law. A shocking number of over 1000 women offer themselves daily as prostitutes in the Amsterdam Area. A lot of these women come from poor Eastern European countries and are victims of sex trafficking. Criminal organizations make big profits out of their misery. Women are forced into prostitution because of debts made by their families, promises made by pimps or through harsh violence. They are afraid to talk and share their stories. Scarlet Cord reaches out to these women. We visit the women at their workplace and offer them help in every way we can (legal advice, shelter, physical needs, other work). Also we tell them about our Lord Jesus; someone who loved prostitutes and came to die for them so they can have life in abundance!
In Amsterdam (and many other places in the Netherlands) drugs are easy to find, in so called ‘coffeeshops’ drugs can be legally ordered and used. It sounds harmless and easy but there are great dangers in using drugs. Addiction is a huge problem; drugs take over a person’s entire life. Under the influence of drugs it is not possible to have normal day jobs or to sustain healthy relationships and family life. The physical effects of drugs are huge and addicts are unable to stop on their own. Our Waypoint formula offers help! We help addicts to live free of drugs and rebuilt their lives. Also we help their families to take steps in reconciliation and acceptance. We believe in the power of prevention; so we visit schools and youth clubs with former addicts to warn about the dangers of drugs. Also they share their stories; Jesus is bigger and greater than any drugs and He can set people free!
